Welcome back, Pat.

I was really pleased to read your piece on Jane Friedman -- it infuriated me that there was virtually no voice raised that called it as it was. With all the buzz on content, the digital revolution and global search -- fine and dandy - there remains the one constant of a human person, an author, with an idea, a dream a passion for something - from whom comes "content" -- and a good publisher, such as Friedman, large or small, recognizes this and balances the business need to market content as a commodity and use the latest technologies to do so -- with the literary need to keep its voice and humanity alive. She had that kind of presence - remarkable.

Pat, you came roaring back with a powerful statement on behalf of Jane Friedman and decency in publishing. As an author, I am in your debt in so many ways; all of us readers are, and I welcome the return of your column.
